Beer Steins as collectibles?

Does anyone have experience owning German Beer Steins as collectibles. I have heard that it is not profitable. True/Not True? Some of the authentic steins are very beautiful I find it hard to beieve they would not go up in value. There is a difference between an antique stein and a collectible stein? What websites specialize in this? Thanks?
