Busting some Beer Myths
Many people believe that you can beat the Beer Belly with Light Beer. Light beers contain around 90-100 calories whereas regular beers usually contain less than 200 calories. Some people would feel the difference is huge and opt for light beer. But if you ask from a dietician, he would tell you the difference is insignificant. So if you are not drinking something like a 300 beers a week, you can always go for the good stuff.
There are some guys who think there is more alcohol in beer when it is darker. This is also a false belief. If you consider a beer like Guinness, which is black, it only contains 4.2% alcohol. In fact beer gets its color from the toasted malts. And toasted malts have no influence on the alcohol content. So what are the ingredients that contain alcohol? Rice syrup, honey and corn syrup are the ingredients that increase the alcohol content of beer, but they have no effect on color of beer.
Another common thinking is that beer can be ruined if warmed and then refrigerated. This is not 100% wrong, because it can happen gradually, if you repeat warming and then refrigerating it for too many times. Actually air, light and time may ruin a beer. Temperature cannot ruin a beer, but extreme temperatures are capable of it. The best thing to do is to go and buy fresh beer and nicely store them in a dark place, and it’s going to be perfect.
The Guinness that’s available in Ireland is much better; this is believed by many people and the thinking is that they sell and distribute to other countries are inferior to the one they sell in “the old country”. Generally, the brewing procedure is low-cost, so there’s no need for a brewery to brew a low quality beer for export and ruin their reputation in the international market. The idea of selling better beer in Ireland is not logical and it’s not right. Apart from few instances, the beer that is sold to the international markets is the exactly the same that they sell anywhere in the Ireland. However, there can be a difference in the freshness because it takes few weeks for a Guinness to reach your town from Dublin.
There are people out there who think that beer shouldn’t be bitter. It is hops that add the bitterness to beer. Hops are added to beer in order to balance the sweetness of the malts and hops also serve as a preserving agent. There are beers that contain a lot of hops, and there are some other beers that contain fewer hops, such as Wheat Beers. The truth is beer gets complexity and all kinds of flavors and aromas, like pine, citrus, and earthiness from hops. You must have heard that people say beer is an acquired taste; the reason behind this saying is the hops. And hops is the ingredient that makes beer delicious.
It’s widely accepted that the best beers are in green bottles. But the truth is brown bottles protect the beer from the light much better than green bottles or clear bottles. After the World War II, there was a shortage of brown glass in Europe, so the European beers were bottled in green. This myth was originated from there as green bottles came to represent imports. This is no accuracy in this statement anymore.
