The Legend Of Stubby Coolers

In the year 1972, Malcolm Lock, a South Australian businessman and pioneer surfing individual had a problem. With the growing demand of wetsuits, his company had to throw away large volume of wetsuit neoprene excess rubbers, and this costs him money.

During his break, Malcolm surfed and has an odd drink or two. It was one of these occasions, he experienced how his hands became a little too cold and his beer quickly got warm. Experienced with the insulating attributes of neoprene, he went about solving the dilemma.

And Presto, the stubby cooler was conceived.

Not anymore will neoprene be disposed. Further, there will be dryer hands, but the most important of them all, beer will retain its coldness longer.

In a place like Australia, where people live to enjoy a cold beer, the usefulness of the stubby cooler were immediately discovered. At once, Instantly, the stubby cooler became an important drinking add-on. It was “haute couture” to have the finest stubby cooler—a cultural phenomenon has started.

From this inspiration, an enterprising industry has grown; the original stubby cooler is now used to insulate bottles, to have various versions and many other forms. However, the simplicity and practicality of the “original stubby cooler” design remains. Now, they are variously considered as stubby coolers, stubby holders, can coolers, can holders, cozies, or wetsuit coolers.

Those first simple stubby coolers were plain and unadorned, but not long thereafter were adorned with messages of companies who wanted to make known themselves. Currently, customized stubby coolers are adorned with full color with emblems promoting products and services, as gifts and mementos.

Way back in 1972, when Malcolm conceived of original problem-solving idea, there was no way for him to envisage the path to fame his invention would follow.

As long as men want to enjoy a cold beer, the stubby cooler will flourish.
